OSWEGO, NY- It’s been two and a half years since the last Whiteout Weekend on the SUNY Oswego campus. There were many questions heading into the game on Saturday night, but the Lakers and the Oswego community answered those questions with confidence. The Oswego State Lakers took a dominating 5-2 win over the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, with a raucous, rowdy, and vibrant crowd in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Center backing the team.
The packed student section received near-instant gratification from the Lakers. Tyler Flack chipped a rebounding puck off the pad of Cardinals goalie Anthony Del Tufo into the net to open scoring. Shane Bull picked up an assist on the play. Just under two minutes later, Oswego won a game of tic-tac-toe to put another goal on the scoreboard. Connor Sleeth scored the goal, with the defensive pairing of Ben Addison and Ryan Dickinson going apple picking on the play for a pair of assists.
In the second period, the Lakers put two goals on the board in 35 seconds of play. At 10:14, Garrett Clegg added a goal for the Lakers. Tommy Cahill earned his first point of the season with an assist on the play. Conor Smart came charging down the ice to score almost immediately after the faceoff. Alex DiCarlo and Travis Broughman picked up assists on the play.
Bennett Stockdale was Plattsburgh’s lone bastion of hope in what was a less than ideal Whiteout game for the Cardinals. Stockdale scored both Plattsburgh goals. The first goal came on a scrum in front of the net at 8:59 in the second period. Line-mates Hunter Alden and Carson Gallagher were given the assists. Stockdale’s second goal came late in the third period. Mike Falanga and Matt Araujo picked up the assists on Plattsburgh’s final goal.
Plattsburgh was hoping to find some momentum after Stockdale’s second goal to capsize the Lakers’ big boat of momentum. However, AJ Ryan would fire a puck into the back of the net to take the Lakers’ three goal lead back. Josh LeBlanc picked up an assist on the play.
Steven Kozikoski saw his shutout streak end, but not his win streak. He has 3 straight SUNYAC conference game wins to start 2022. He made 24 saves on the night to cap another stellar performance from the Wizard of Koz.
The Lakers head on the road on January 28th to face off against the Cortland Red Dragons. In the Teal Game, the Lakers defeated Cortland by a final score of 2-1.
