OSWEGO, NY – It was oh-so-close.
The Oswego State Lakers battled the Cortland Red Dragons into overtime, but a deflection goal off of Dany Donegan by Kait Bourgeois sent Cortland to the NEWHL Playoffs.
Molly Goergen and Joanna Hiebert danced on the pads for well over sixty minutes, as a full-blown goalie battle ensued in the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena and Convocation Hall. In just under 71 minutes of hockey, both goalies made magnificent saves. Cortland’s Goergen had 30 saves for her first playoff shutout, while Hiebert made 21 saves for Oswego. Cortland had less shots than Oswego, but the puck luck was not there for the Lakers late. Dany Donegan was credited with the game-winning goal on the stats sheet, with Kait Bourgeois and Molly McCabe picking up assists.
Cortland will face the Plattsburgh Cardinals in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena for the 2021-2022 NEWHL Championship game.
