CREATE A RADIO SHOW

GET ON AIR

We allow anyone and everyone, no matter their major or year, to have a show on our radio! We highly encourage having co-hosts, so invite your friends along!

You may play any genre of music you like and talk about anything that is broadcast appropriate. From 10 pm until 6 am you can have a show that plays explicit music. This is because of an FCC provision known as Safe Harbor.

Each show is required to have a promo, while production elements like intros and segues are optional, but encouraged.

COMPLETE TRAINING

Each DJ must be trained on various topics such as: proper microphone technique, how to operate the console, how to operate the automation system, and more!

DJs must achieve six (6) hours of shadowing at least two (2) current shows. A signed shadowing sheet will be used as proof of completion. See what shows are open to shadowers here:  Shows Open to Shadowing

DJs must also read WNYO’s handbook, which can be found here: WNYO ’25-’26 Handbook

SCHEDULE A DJ TEST

Once a future DJ has competed the mandatory six (6) hours of shadowing, they are able to schedule a test. The test will be conducted by the General Manager, Programming Director, Music Director, or other E-Board member permitted to test new DJs.

This test consists of two parts:

  1. The Written Test consists of a series of multiple-choice and written response questions that cover various pieces of WNYO’s Handbook.
  2. The On-Air Test consists of a demonstration of ability to use the E6 audio board, operate & manage WideOrbit, and run a professional & coherent radio program.

The last page of WNYO’s Handbook must be printed, signed, and brought to the test.

CREATE A SHOW

Once a future has passed their DJ certification test, they can create a show. Shows must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Talk
  • News/NPR
  • Sports
  • Hip-Hop/R&B
  • Indie
  • Pop/Rock
  • Variety (Other)

These categories are chosen to fall into category-specific show times so audiences know what to expect when they’re tuning in. These show times can be seen on our Programming page.

Shows that are just starting can only have one (1) hour of runtime a week. Once a show has been on-air for at least one month (four weeks) worth of shows, they may be eligible to run for two (2) consecutive hours during the following semester.
