Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State Volleyball team fought their way back to .500 over the weekend as they took part in the Oswego State Invitational tournament at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.
Friday
Oswego faced off against Elmira College to start their tournament play. While the Lakers struggled at first, dropping a set to the Eagles, Oswego rebounded to take the next 3 sets to take a 3-1 victory. Oswego made a statement in the last 3 sets, racking up 52 kills over Elmira’s 29 kills. 11 of Elmira’s kills came from the first set. Cara Simplicio led the way with 11 kills, with Sydney Chiffriller contributing 10 kills while defensively leading the team with 19 digs.
Saturday
Saturday’s doubleheader for the Lakers started off with a dominating 3-0 win over SUNY Canton. SUNY Canton fell to 0-10 on the year while the Lakers moved to 6-5 before their afternoon match. Emma Fiorentine led the way with 8 kills. Simplicio and McKenna Corbin both had 6 aces in a match that featured strong serves from the whole team. Simplicio also contributed six digs, with Skylar Bechard doing the same.
Saturday afternoon saw SUNY Oswego take their only loss of the tournament against St. John Fisher, knocking their record back to 6-6 on the year. St. John Fisher was able to take a 3-0 match win, although Oswego was nearly able to prevail in the first set. Emma Fiorentine continued her strong Saturday with 7 kills, while Simplicio and Georgia Farry contributed 4 each. It was a busy day for McKenna Corbin, as she contributed 18 assists for the Lakers. Fiorentine and Farry each had two blocks in the match.
The Oswego State Volleyball team looks to move to 7-6 on Tuesday when they play Cazenovia College in Oswego before an important 4-game stretch of SUNYAC games . You can hear Tuesday’s game at 7:00pm on WNYO’s Stream 2.
