OSWEGO, NY- There was a full weekend of on-ice action for the Oswego State Lakers Men’s Hockey team. The Lakers came away with two conference wins on the weekend.

Oswego Conquers Cortland in 5-3 Victory

The Oswego State Lakers held off the Cortland Red Dragons in a tightly contested 5-3 victory on the road in Cortland’s Alumni Arena.

The Red Dragons opened scoring with a goal by Sutter Donegan in the first period. Andrew Clouden and Anthony Bernardo picked up the assists. Travis Broughman quickly answered for the Lakers, however, with a game-tying goal late in the first period. The assists came from line-mates Alex DiCarlo and Connor Sleeth.

Ethan Homitz would break the tie in the second period, as the Dragons’ captain put one around Steven Kozikoski. Donegan would pick up the assist. The Lakers answered Homitz’s goal with two goals in three minutes. Tommy Cahill scored his first Laker goal two minutes after the Homitz goal, then Garrett Clegg airmailed a puck over net-minder Luca Durante to put the Lakers up 3-2. Mac Lewis picked up the assists for the goals. However, Cortland was not going to let the Lakers sail to victory easily. Nate Berke scored the only power play goal of the game with assists with Matt Jahn and Michael Sciore.

That would end scoring for the Dragons, however, as the Lakers dominated the third period. Travis Broughman would score twice to complete a hat trick, his first career hat trick. Alex DiCarlo and Quinn Warmuth earned assists on Broughman’s first goal, while Broughman’s third goal was an unassisted into an empty net.

Oswego Deals With The Blue Devils in 3-2 Triumph

The Lakers traveled back up 481 for Saturday’s night’s home game against the Fredonia Blue Devils. On Minor Hockey Night, the Lakers prevailed in a gritty 3-2 SUNYAC conference matchup.

The Lakers dominated the first 30 minutes of the game. Alex DiCarlo scored 30 seconds into the game for the first period’s only goal. Line-mates Connor Sleeth and Travis Broughman picked up the assists. Tyler Flack would score at 7:34 in the second period with Rocco Andreacchi grabbing an assist. Travis Broughman would cap his 5-point weekend with an unassisted bar-down goal at 13:01.

The Blue Devils made a late charge at the lead, but the Lakers held off the charge for the victory. Gregg Lee would score at 13:56 in the second from Anders Johnson. Fredonia would score again at 10:15 in the third from Ryan Bailey with an assist from David Sudbrink. The Lakers would hold off the Blue Devils to take their sixth straight win and fifth straight conference win.

The Lakers were ranked in this week’s USCHO poll at No.13 ahead of major SUNYAC matchups against Brockport and No.2 Geneseo. WNYO will have coverage of both games this Friday and Saturday, February 4th and 5th. Countdown to Faceoff starts at 6:00pm both nights, with puck drop at 7:00pm.
