MEN’S SOCCER: Lakers Open Season With Tie Versus Morrisville

It’s a rare day when you can say everyone on the field technically won, but that was exactly what happened when the Oswego State Lakers tied the Morrisville State Mustangs 1-1 to open their 2021 season.

The Mustangs struck first in regulation, as Justin Klaczko scored Morrisville’s only goal to take a 1-0 lead over the Lakers with just over 48 minutes played. Chandley Elie picked up an assist as well. The Lakers fired back soon after, tying the game up with just under 55 minutes played. Kyle Gehnrich scored for the Lakers, with an assist coming from Michael Gualtieri.

The game ended in a tie after two golden goal overtimes, but the match was a chaotic affair. 6 yellow cards and 1 red card were handed out, all to Morrisville players. James Flannery received the red card, and the entire team received a yellow card near the end of overtime to cap the string of offenses.

On the offensive side, the statistics tell an interesting story. Oswego had 43 shots on goal total, with 15 of those coming in overtime play. Morrisville could only muster 3 shots with none of them coming in overtime play. Kyle Gehnrich scored the Laker’s only goal and had 4 shots on goal. Kieran Gilroy had 3 shots on goal as well.

It was a tale of two games for the goalies. Mustang goalie Cody Welkley made 14 saves, while Laker goalie Brian Terra had no saves. Welkley faced consistent pressure from the Oswego offense, while the only shot Terra faced went in.

Both teams racked up quite a few fouls, as Oswego had 15 and Morrisville had 13, with 10 of Morrisville’s 13 coming in the first half. Oswego also had 17 corner kicks, which towers over Morrisville’s two corner kicks in the game.

The Oswego State Lakers will look to take their first win of the year as they face off against the Keuka College Wolves on September 4th at 11:00AM.
