WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Weekend Preview

OSWEGO, NY- It’s almost time for students go home for Thanksgiving Break; but the Women’s Hockey team is making their trip home a little early. The Oswego State Lakers will spend their weekend of play right here at home inside the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Center. They will face off against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos and the SUNY Potsdam Bears this weekend. They will then face off against the William Smith Herons on Tuesday night to wrap up their homestand before Thanksgiving.

Last Weekend

It was a tough weekend for the Lakers. On Friday night, the Lakers dropped a game to the Cortland Red Dragons 2-1 in a tough loss on the road. The Lakers returned home on Saturday, for their portion of the Teal Game weekend in honor of the late Mary Gosek. They faced the #1 team in the nation in the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The Lakers played a good game. but a few late goals allowed Plattsburgh to take a 5-0 win after leading 2-0 early in the game. This weekend, Oswego looks to turn this two-loss streak around at home.

SUNY Canton Hops Into Town

The Canton Kangaroos will be the first team Oswego faces in this 3-game stay in the Deb. Canton has started their year off with a 3-0-1 record. They took two wins over King’s college, by scores of 4-0 and 14-1. They then opened NEWHL play with two games against Morrisville. The Kangaroos took the first game by a score of 4-2 at home, but tied the Mustangs 2-2 in the second game in Morrisville. A win for the Lakers against Canton will be a nice morale boost for the team as they get through this grueling stretch of the schedule. Oswego has played Canton 7 times; they haven’t lost once.

SUNY Potsdam: A Grizzly Battle

The Potsdam Bears will follow the Canton bus down I-81 from the North Country to visit the Wheelhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers have seen the Bears once already at home this year, where the Lakers and Bears took a 4-4 tie. The Bears are 1-2-1, having lost to Morrisville in overtime and William Smith by a score of 0-6. Their lone win came against William Smith, where they triumphed with a 2-1 final score. The Bears always play up to their competition, so it’s safe to say the Lakers will have to be on their A-Game to ensure they complete a weekend sweep

William Smith: Hosting The Herons

The William Smith Herons will make the trek north from Geneva to face off against the Lakers on the chilly, wind-swept shores of Lake Ontario. The Herons are 2-4 to start the year. They took a win against Potsdam, as mentioned previously, with their second win Salem State at home. The Herons are coming off a two game sweep by #5 Elmira, who won 2-3 in overtime last Friday and took a 0-10 win over the Herons on Saturday. The Herons are looking to turn their season around, and an odd Tuesday matchup with the Lakers may be a chance for them to build morale. The Lakers, however, will ideally be looking for some dessert to finish off what they hope will be a Thanksgiving trifecta of triumphs with a win over the Herons on Tuesday.

Tune In!

Oswego starts their weekend on Friday, November 19th against SUNY Canton, with the puck dropping at 7:00pm. The game will be broadcast by WNYO on Stream 2. The SUNY Potsdam game on Saturday, November 20th, will kick off at 3:00pm, with coverage on WNYO again on Stream 2. For Tuesday’s game against William Smith, Stream 1 and 88.9FM will carry the game, complete with Countdown to Faceoff. Countdown to Faceoff will start at 6:30, with puck drop at 7:00pm.
