OSWEGO, NY- Media day kicked off the 2021 season for the Oswego State women’s hockey team. This season marks the first official season for new coach Mark Digsby. Coach Digsby was named the interim head coach before the 2020-2021 season before the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, Digsby was the associate head coach in the 2019-2020 season.
Digsby, with his position now secure, looks forward to getting on the ice for the first time since early 2020. However, job security has been the least of his concerns as the team prepares to play.
“Right now, because of everything we’ve been through, that has been the least of my concerns”, said Digsby. “It’s been a lot of work just to get everyone in their jersey’s today. Between all of the pandemic issues, doing recruitment, and keeping everyone focused; it’s been a lot. We are so excited to be here. Personally, this is really the first time I’ve thought about really having that official head coach title.”
“Communication has been a huge focus for us”, added Digsby. “We have 18 new players to the team, so that first night out on the ice will be big for us to get settled in. I think that the captains (Philomena Teggart and Aisilynn McAleer) have taken a lot of responsibility there and have put a lot of effort into working as a team on the ice.”
Philomena Teggart, one of the team captains at the conference, was particularly excited about Oswego’s hiring of a new assistant coach in Megan Quinn.
Teggart commented, “Coach Quinn and I both played for the Durham West Junior team in our early careers. Her experience with the Toronto Six in the NWHL at defense has been a huge help for myself and others on the defense.”
Oswego women’s hockey kicks off their preseason games on October 16th against the Valley Eagles.
