Hey everyone!

My name is Jarrad Wakefield, and this an intro to the Wheel Hop Blog! This is based on the radio show I host with Jack Callahan on Mondays from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. I have also done live Oswego Buccaneers hockey, and plan to do more play by play and color commentating for the upcoming spring collegiate sports for our very own Lakers.

What is Wheel Hop Blog?

Wheel Hop Blog is primarily going to focus on the local racing scene. My blog posts will likely come out on Mondays alongside the show. However, there isn’t show next week, so expect the next blog to coincide with our show returning in a week. Sometimes, the radio show is not quite enough time for me to cover all of the local pavement and dirt racing that I would like to cover in the radio show. This is a perfect avenue for me to share more of this news that is so important to our area. I feel many people on campus don’t realize we have our own track, the Oswego Speedway, located on the east side of town. Oswego is the only track in the country to host wingless supermodifieds on a weekly basis. In addition, the NASCAR Tour Modified series makes two trips here!

Why local racing?

Local racing is very special to me. When I was twelve to eighteen I raced go karts and eventually raced an orange 1986 Ford Mustang at my local tracks. The amount of work that goes into local racing is intensive. People get home from their day jobs and work into the night on their race cars chasing victory. The drivers, cars, crews, officials, media members, even the fans all have very unique stories that make the action on track have so much more meaning to it. In contrast, it can be hard to watch a NASCAR race and connect to it over the TV because you may not know much about the drivers, crews, or cars. Going to a track in person, especially for a weekly show, is an atmosphere that simply can’t be recreated.

Any specific series or tracks?

Touring series and tracks this blog will cover are still mainly TBD, however, these series and tracks will be covered in my blog:

  • The Super DIRTCar Series
  • The DIRTCar Sportsman Series
  • Weedsport Speedway
  • Oswego Speedway
See you all next week for the first blog!
